Interdisciplinary Lecture
From Invention to Patent: Protection and Commercialization of Research Results
TUM ForTe Patents & Licenses
in cooperation with the MCTS/Carl von Linde Academy
Description:
Practice-Oriented Introduction to Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)
With Particular Emphasis on University Inventions
This course offers a comprehensive and practice-oriented introduction to the field of industrial property rights, with a special focus on inventions originating in academic institutions. In addition to patents, it provides an in-depth examination of other key areas of intellectual property—namely design protection, domain and trademark rights, and utility models—delivered by subject-matter experts.
The curriculum traces the entire process from the initial idea to the acquisition of the respective intellectual property right, its legal enforcement through judicial proceedings, and its commercial exploitation, particularly in the context of academic spin-offs.
To ensure subject-specific relevance, students are divided into discipline-based groups, where they engage in advanced study of patenting strategies tailored to their technical fields. This is facilitated through the analysis of practical case studies.
Duration: 11 Units, every Monday, 17:45–19:45, Room MW 0350, Egbert-von-Hoyer-Hörsaal TUM München Campus Garching (Maschinenwesen)

The European Patent Office's free, modular MIPEF programme offers students and doctoral candidates high-quality IP training.
The MIPEF programme covers the basics of IPR and their practical application in two courses, one for beginners and one for advanced learners. The aim of the course is to enable participants to understand the value of IP and learn how to successfully acquire, manage and license IP and patents. The course content is taught through seminars with experts, self-study, case studies and group work, and is assessed by a final test. The programme starts in mid-October and ends after a final test at the end of December.
