TUM patent application - What’s in it for me?
- TUM covers the expenses associated with evaluating the invention, including the costs for patentability assessment and market analysis
- TUM covers the costs of the patent procedure in the event of a positive evaluation
- No financial risk for the inventor and the chair
- According to the Employee Inventions Act (ArbEG), inventors receive 30 % of the income
- TUM ForTe P&L assists with the patent procedure
- Patent and publication for your CV
- Acquisition of knowledge and practical experience in patent procedures
How is the income from TUM-IP shared?
- The Chair receives a share of the revenue
- Inventor remuneration
- Financing of patent applications and support of the entrepreneurial ecosystem and staff costs
- TUM ForTe P&L offers grants for technology funding (up to €50,000) for inventions with TUM IP (e.g. for prototypes)

How do I file a patent application for an invention and how does the process work?
If you want to apply for a patent for your invention, the process is as follows:
Invention disclosure
- Fill out the invention disclosure form
- Send it to TUM ForTe P&L by post or via Sync&Share folder (send a short email to patent(at)tum.de and we will create a Sync&Share folder for you to exchange the invention digitally)

Evaluation and market analysis in collaboration with a service provider
- Evaluation of the invention in terms of patentability
- Analysis of the commercialisation potential
- The evaluation is conducted by an external organisation specialised in patent exploitation.
Filing a patent application in collaboration with a patent attorney specialised in the technical field
- Your invention is only protected once you file the patent application with the patent office!
- The patent application will be filed if the evaluation is positive
- We will search for a commercialisation partner for the technology, with the support of an external service provider and in consultation with the inventors
