Interdisciplinary Lecture
From Invention to Patent: Protection and Commercialization of Research Results
TUM ForTe Patents & Licenses
in cooperation with the MCTS/Carl von Linde Academy
Description:
Practice-Oriented Introduction to Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)
With Particular Emphasis on University Inventions
This course offers a comprehensive and practice-oriented introduction to the field of industrial property rights, with a special focus on inventions originating in academic institutions. In addition to patents, it provides an in-depth examination of other key areas of intellectual property—namely design protection, domain and trademark rights, and utility models—delivered by subject-matter experts.
The curriculum traces the entire process from the initial idea to the acquisition of the respective intellectual property right, its legal enforcement through judicial proceedings, and its commercial exploitation, particularly in the context of academic spin-offs.
To ensure subject-specific relevance, students are divided into discipline-based groups, where they engage in advanced study of patenting strategies tailored to their technical fields. This is facilitated through the analysis of practical case studies.
Duration: 11 Units, every Monday, 17:45–19:45, Room MW 0350, Egbert-von-Hoyer-Hörsaal TUM München Campus Garching (Maschinenwesen)

Lecture on computer-implemented inventions
TUM ForTe Patents & Licences is hosting a lecture on computer-implemented inventions together with the European Patent Office (EPO). I would ask you to forward the invitation to TUM scientists who might be interested in this field.
In short, a computer-implemented invention is an innovation that is realised by using computers or programmable devices and software to solve a technical problem. Since a patent always presupposes a technical character, the technical solution to the problem is the decisive criterion for distinguishing it from pure software, which is protected by copyright.
In this lecture, two experts from the European Patent Office (EPO) will provide insights into the patentability and the granting process of computer-implemented inventions. Using selected areas of technology at TUM, they will illustrate the growing importance of this topic in the modern patent system.
